Paraphrase of telegram from the Governor of Hong Kong
to the Secretary of State for the Colonies. (Received, Colonial Office, 8.30 a.m. 26th May, 1922.)
Strike.
Your telegram of May 23rd. In order to obtain increased pay launch men other than Government employees struck work May 18th. Though employers made considerabbe concessions they refuse to grant full demands in the case of some of the most highly paid men. Strike appears to have had entirely economic origin and seems at present to have no political significance although doubtless Sun-Yatsen will try to make capital of it if it continues So far as I can ascertain other unions have very little sympathy with the strikers and it is improbable that it will spread to them. Settlement prospects are uncertain but I shall probably be able tomorrow to report on this point more clearly.
